HCG

Also known as: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, Pregnyl, Novarel, Ovidrel

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone naturally produced during pregnancy that mimics luteinizing hormone (LH) activity. It is used clinically for fertility treatment in both sexes and is widely employed during and after anabolic steroid cycles to maintain testicular function and support recovery.

Mechanism of Action

HCG binds to the LH/CG receptor on Leydig cells in the testes, stimulating testosterone and estradiol production independently of pituitary LH secretion. This maintains intratesticular testosterone levels and prevents testicular atrophy during exogenous androgen use. It does not restore the HPT axis itself, as it bypasses the hypothalamus and pituitary, which is why it is typically used alongside SERMs in PCT protocols.

Dosing Research

Male hypogonadism/fertility: 1000-2000 IU 2-3 times per week subcutaneously or intramuscularly. On-cycle maintenance: 250-500 IU 2-3 times per week. PCT blast protocol: 1000-2000 IU every other day for 1-2 weeks before starting SERMs. Half-life is approximately 24-36 hours. Requires refrigeration after reconstitution.

Side Effects & Risks

Estradiol elevation is the primary concern due to stimulated intratesticular aromatization. Gynecomastia possible without concurrent AI use. Headache, irritability, and water retention. Prolonged high-dose use can desensitize Leydig cells, paradoxically impairing recovery. Injection site reactions. Rare: ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in females.
